Vol. 105 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Sligo Harbour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reasons for the delay in approving of the plans and specifications for the improvement and further development of Sligo Harbour; and if he will see that a decision is expedited as much as possible.

The Sligo Harbour Commissioners have received maintenance grants of £1,439 and £1,700 for the years 1945 and 1946, respectively. They have been informed that a grant of £2,000 will be made towards the cost of the construction of a cattle lairage, if this work is carried out to my satisfaction.

An application has been received from the commissioners for a grant of £65,000 for development works estimated to cost £134,000. They have been advised that an examination of the harbour by the engineering staff of the Office of Public Works will be necessary in connection with the consideration of this proposal. It would appear that the plans submitted by the harbour commissioners will require considerable revision. In view of the extensive volume of harbour improvement works for the execution or supervision of which that office has assumed responsibility, I am not in a position to say when the latest application from Sligo can be dealt with.
