Vol. 105 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Food Vouchers.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that Miss K. Bell, of 7 Jamestown Road, Finglas, who is a tuberculosis case, and who returned home recently from Newcastle Sanatorium, has now been refused food vouchers for milk, butter and eggs, and also the weekly contribution of 5/-towards her maintenance; and if, in view of this lady's condition, he is prepared to have the case investigated immediately with a view to having the vouchers and assistance restored to her.

The issue of food vouchers, clothing, bed and bedding under approved domiciliary welfare schemes for tuberculous persons is a matter for the local authority concerned and particulars of individual cases coming within the scope of the schemes do not normally come before my Department.

I am informed, however, that in the case mentioned by the Deputy the issue of food vouchers for milk, butter and eggs has not been discontinued and that this information has already been conveyed to the Deputy by the commissioner administering the affairs of the Dublin County Council.

With regard to the question of assistance, I am not aware that the position is as stated. The Deputy must be aware, however, that the grant of home assistance is a matter entirely within the discretion of the public assistance authority, and the Minister is precluded by law from directing the giving of public assistance in any particular case.
