asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the numerous complaints concerning the sale of fireworks to children in Dublin; and if he will take steps to prevent the sale of slap-bangs and fireworks of a noisy and dangerous nature.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Fireworks.
Mr. Boland
I have seen several complaints that the discharging of fireworks in streets and other public places has become a serious nuisance during the past few weeks. It is an offence to discharge a firework in a street or public place, and I understand that several prosecutions are being instituted by the police.
The Explosives Act, 1875, applies to fireworks and they can be imported only on licence issued under that Act. If the nuisance continues, I shall consider refusing all applications for import licences. I have no power to prohibit the sale of fireworks which have been imported.
