Vol. 111 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youghal Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what steps the Youghal Urban Council are taking to provide 120 houses which, according to the White Paper, P. 8573, issued in January last, are urgently required to meet the needs of the workers in Youghal.

Plans have been approved for the erection of 44 houses in respect of three schemes submitted by the Youghal Urban District Council as a first instalment of the housing programme for the urban area. Tenders received for the erection of 18 of these houses were considered too high having regard to the rents at which houses are required to be let and the council decided to defer the scheme. The council have been asked to give further consideration to the question of proceeding with their schemes in view of the higher grants since made available from the Transition Development Fund.

I hope the Minister will take the necessary steps to see that the scheme is pushed forward as quickly as possible.
