Vol. 112 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Chinaware.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that complaints have appeared in the Cork Press from American visitors stating that they would not be allowed to take chinaware out of this country although they were prepared to purchase the ware with dollars; and whether, in view of the plentiful supply of chinaware in Ireland at present, he will revoke the Order preventing its export.

My attention has been called to the complaints to which the Deputy refers. The supply of chinaware to meet the present and future needs of this country is not fully assured and consequently I am unable to agree to the suggestion that the restrictions on export should be completely withdrawn. In view, however, of representations which have been made by members of the Oireachtas and commercial interests, I am prepared to have administrative arrangements made which will ensure that visitors to this country will be permitted to take out a reasonable supply of chinaware with them on their departure.

Does that mean that the Minister is prepared to give a visitor, who wants to buy a full set, permission to take out a full set with him, because I understand they are allowed to take portions of a set rather than a full set.

I think that the Deputy may take it that a reasonable supply would mean a complete set.

I would ask the Minister to bear in mind that this month and next month are the important months for the sale of these goods to visitors.

I can assure the Deputy that I am fairly fully aware of the circumstances, because when I was in Cork some time ago I was approached in this matter.
