Vol. 112 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Labour for Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance whether there has been any change in the method of recruiting labour for the employment schemes of the Office of Public Works and the Special Employment Schemes Office other than the provision for the employment of those disemployed through the cessation of hand-won turf production.

The answer to this question is in the negative.

During the debate on the Estimate for the Office of Public Works, I quoted from the Connacht Tribune of the 3rd July a statement made by the Parliamentary Secretary to the effect that if there was anybody found unemployed he would have a job for him in the morning—that any man who would apply to him would get a job. I asked the Parliamentary Secretary if that was correct and he said that that was the truth. In view of that statement am I to take it, arising out of this reply, that there was no foundation in fact for the implication contained in it—that the Parliamentary Secretary is in a position to offer employment to unemployed people under public works schemes and minor employment schemes by virtue of his office as Parliamentary Secretary?

To registered unemployed—and there are none such in Mount Bellew.

I am very glad to hear that reply.
