Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Homespun Tweed Industry.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state (i) the value of Round Tower hand-woven tweeds, as distinct from homespuns, exported since May, 1949, to each of the following: United States, Great Britain, Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands, France and Belgium, and (ii) to what extent markets abroad have been found for the homespun tweed industry.

The information sought in the first part of the question is—

£

United States

1,408

Great Britain

411

Australia

Nil

South Africa

Nil

The Netherlands

1,331

France

198

Belgium

56

The position regarding homespuns is still unsatisfactory.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, can he state if the proposed extensions to the Round Tower tweed mill at Kilcar will be proceeded with; and, if so, when?

As a matter of fact, I have made arrangements that work will commence practically at once on the extensions referred to by the Deputy.
