Vol. 118 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Fish.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will make arrangements for the distribution of fresh fish in the towns and villages of rural Ireland in order to dispose of the increased quantity of fish which is now available by reason of the fact that more fishermen and more new boats are operating than at any time since 1932.

I have no reason to believe that the normal channels of distribution are not adequate to deal with the landings of marketable fish at present being made by our fishermen. I do not accordingly agree that special action on my part as suggested by the Deputy is called for.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in several areas in rural Ireland it is impossible to get fresh fish, even on Friday?

I understand that the Minister for Agriculture has announced proposals which are designed to secure that in future supplies of fish will be available throughout the country.
