Vol. 119 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Hospitals' Bed Accommodation.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware of the acute shortage of bed accommodation in Dublin hospitals; and whether he has any immediate proposals for easing the position.

I am aware of the position referred to by the Deputy, but as he will be aware, every effort is made through the operation of the Bed Bureau to find day-to-day solutions to the problems to which this situation gives rise.

According as the Dublin hospitals projects included in the short-term hospital building programme are completed the situation will be eased.

Already with the provision of over 500 beds in St. Mary's Chest Hospital in the Phoenix Park the position regarding T.B. accommodation has much improved. The site development work for the new regional sanatorium at Blanchardstown is in progress; and similar work has just been completed at the new children's sanatorium at Ballyowen.

I have approved the building of two new major general hospitals which will contain in the aggregate about 1,000 beds, and the reconstruction and extension of St. Kevin's Hospital. The building of nurses' homes at St. Michael's, Dún Laoghaire, and Meath Hospital will provide 49 extra general beds in the next year or so. The reconstruction of Loughlinstown Hospital should be completed this year.

For maternity, I have approved of the building of a new Coombe Hospital at Donore Avenue and planning is proceeding. For children, work has started on a new 304-bed hospital at Crumlin. In addition, work is well advanced on the provision of neo-natal units at three lying-in hospitals. For fever needs, tenders will shortly be invited for a new fever hospital at Blackditch.

The Deputy will appreciate that the position in Dublin should also be relieved by the provision of the major general, maternity and tuberculosis hospitals at centres in the provinces.

With your permission, Sir, I give notice that I shall raise the subject matter of Question No. 15 on the Adjournment.
