I am informed by Bord na Móna that the numbers of men employed by them in cutting turf in July of 1947, 1948 and 1949, were, at the peak of employment, 2,151, 2,988, and 4,084 respectively.
The number of workers employed by county councils on the emergency production of turf in July, 1947, was 15,076. Production by county councils ceased at the end of the 1947 season. Information regarding employment given by private interests in producing turf for sale is not available.
