asked the Minister for Health if he will state the rates of remuneration payable to the indoor domestic staff at Crooksling Sanatorium, County Dublin, as at (a) 31st December, 1949, and (b) 1st May, 1950; and, further, whether any recent alteration has been made in the rates of remuneration applicable to these workers either by way of a salary adjustment or a temporary bonus; and, if so, the amount of the increase involved and the date of its operation.

I propose, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, to take Questions Nos. 43 and 44 together.

I have been informed by the health authority that the remuneration of the maids employed at Crooksling Sanatorium has been the subject of discussion with their trade union and I, accordingly, assume that the Deputy's questions relate to maids only.

At 31st December, 1949, the rate of remuneration, including temporary bonus, payable to non-resident maids, was £2 4s. 6d. per week with free meals while on duty. The same scale of remuneration applied at 1st May, 1950. The health authority submitted to my Department a fortnight ago a proposal to grant an increase of 3/- per week to these maids, with effect from 1st October, 1949, and the matter is under consideration. A decision will be conveyed to the health authority in the near future.

At 31st December, 1949, the scale of remuneration of the maids who reside at the sanatorium was £60 per annum, proceeding by annual increments of £2 10s. 0d. to £65 per annum and thence by annual increments of £4 10s. 0d. to £74 per annum. This scale was replaced, with effect from 1st April, 1949, by one of £70 per annum, proceeding by annual increments of £4 10s. 0d. to £79 per annum. These maids are provided with full board and they are paid cost-of-living bonus at the rate of 7/6 per week.
