Vol. 124 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Timber.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether timber merchants are restricting the sale of timber in Cork, notwithstanding the fact that there are large stocks held by them and whether his Department is considering a further increase in the price of timber.

I am not aware that timber merchants in Cork are restricting sales of timber, but if the Deputy will furnish particulars I will have the matter investigated forthwith. I should add that the world prices of timber have increased considerably since October, 1950, and, consequently, a revision of the existing controlled prices which have been in operation since 13th October, 1950, is necessary and is being undertaken. The cost of timber at present held in stock by the merchants will be taken into consideration when fixing revised prices.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that some purchasers were told that stocks were being held for the increased price?

I am not so aware.
