Vol. 126 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the acute congestion that prevails in Sligo post office, and the conditions under which the telephone staff have to work; and, if so, if he will state when it is hoped to have extensions carried out in this building.

The inadequacy of the accommodation at Sligo post office, particularly for the needs of the telephone service, is fully recognised. In order to effect early improvement, arrangements are being made for the transfer shortly of certain staff from the post office to other premises. The telephone exchange will then be enlarged.

The preparation of plans for an automatic exchange building on a site acquired behind the post office is proceeding. Removal of the telephone staff and of certain telephone equipment to this building will release space in the post office which is badly needed for postal and telegraphic purposes.
