Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deduction from Wages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the fact that Mr. D. Sullivan (Control No. 1062, Bog No. 022) was employed for four days by Bord na Móna and that 15/3 was deducted from his pay for tools which he was not allowed to bring away; and, if so, if he will state whether such a deduction from four days' wages is not excessive.

I have been informed by Bord na Móna that the deduction of 15/3 referred to by the Deputy was in respect of meals and accommodation provided for Mr. Sullivan at the board's hostel during the period from Wednesday, 27th June, to Monday, 2nd July, 1951.

In addition, the sum of 2/4 was deducted from Mr. Sullivan's wages in respect of a pair of rubber boots, costing £1 2s. 4d., which were issued to him by the board. Mr. Sullivan surrendered the boots on leaving the board's employment and was allowed credit of £1. I do not regard the deductions as excessive.

I would ask the Minister to get a copy of the docket because on the docket that 15/3 is put down for tools. There is also a further deduction for board and lodgings.

I have no information on the matter except that supplied to me by the board, and they state that the deduction of 15/3 was in respect of meals and accommodation.

I will send the Minister the docket.

I will inquire into it.
