Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Small Arms and Ammunition Factory.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether the British Army authorities have changed from the Lee Enfield rifle and .303 ammunition to a different calibre weapon; and, if so, what steps he intends to take to ensure a sufficient supply of .303 ammunition for rifles in use by the National Army and if he will consider the desirability of establishing a small arms and ammunition factory.

I am aware from newspaper and radio reports that the British Army is contemplating making the change referred to by the Deputy. I have no reason to believe, however, that this will result in our being unable to obtain supplies of .303 ammunition as heretofore.

The question of establishing a small arms and ammunition factory has been engaging the attention of my Department for some time, but in present circumstances the difficulties in the way of such a project are very great. The matter will, however, continue to receive consideration.

Is the Minister aware that the British Army are definitely changing over from .303 rifles to automatic rifles of a smaller calibre and if that is the case is it not a fair assumption to say that they will cease production of .303? Under those circumstances, would the Minister not consider it advisable to take very serious note of the suggestion in Deputy Doyle's question?

I have already stated that consideration will be given to that but what the Deputy refers to will, I think, to be a long-term project. It will take a considerable time before that change over is completed.

They are already issued to several units.

Would the Minister indicate to the House what actual difficulties there are which prevent the setting up of a munition factory to supply our own requirements?
