Vol. 127 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosk for Belmont, County Cork.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether, in view of the very great inconvenience caused to the residents of Belmont, Cobh, due to the lack of telephonic facilities in this thickly populated area, he will have a telephone kiosk erected and if he is aware that at present the residents have to walk to the post office, which is a considerable distance from Belmont, to put through a call in cases of urgency necessitating the services of a clergyman or doctor.

The erection of a telephone kiosk in the Belmont area of Cobh would not be warranted at present having regard to the use likely to be made of it and the adequacy of existing public telephone facilities in the town. There are already two kiosks and four call offices in Cobh.

May I suggest that the erection of this kiosk is very necessary? It is over three-quarters of a mile from Belmont to the nearest kiosk and, in view of the fact that 800 people are living in the locality, I suggest that the Minister might accede to the request made several times in this House.

I will always consider applications for kiosks, but at the moment, compared with other towns of the same population, Cobh is very well served.
