Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restrictive Trade Practices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when he hopes to introduce proposals for legislation to abolish restrictive trade practices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will take immediate steps to have the present restrictive practices in respect of petrol and fuel oil sales terminated.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together. I would refer the Deputies to the statement I made in Dáil Éireann, in reply to a question on this subject, on the 31st October, 1951, that I hoped shortly to be in a position to introduce a Bill containing legislative proposals in regard to restrictive trade practices.

In view of the fact that this is a matter that was pressed for a considerable time with the previous Government, and that continues to be pressed on this Government, can the Minister give any approximate date as to when he hopes to introduce this legislation? These restrictive practices, as the Minister is no doubt aware, are causing a considerable amount of trouble in various trades throughout the length and breadth of the country.

The necessary decisions have been taken and the drafting of the legislation is proceeding, but I could not attempt to forecast how long it will take the parliamentary draftsman to produce the draft.

Would it not be possible for the Minister, as a temporary expedient, to take some other course in the meantime while the legislation is pending?

I do not think so.

Will you consider that?

I have considered it.
