Vol. 130 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Salaries.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the maximum salary payable to (a) a married secondary teacher with five children; (b) a married primary teacher with five children; (c) a married vocational teacher with five children and, further, what addition is made to the maximum of each of these salaries (i) for the possession of a university degree, and (ii) as a rent allowance.

In the case of both national and secondary teachers the departmental salary scale structure is one scale for married men and a second scale for women and single men. In the case of vocational teachers the structure is one scale for men whether married or single and a second scale for women.

The maximum incremental salary payable by the Department to a married secondary teacher with five children (assuming that the five children are eligible in respect of children's allowances) is £645; in addition a minimum salary of £200 is payable by the school authorities.

The maximum salary payable to a married trained national teacher with five children (on the same assumption) is £725.

The maximum salary payable to a male vocational teacher whether married (with or without children) or single is £615.

Bonuses for special qualifications are payable to all three groups of teachers. The bonuses payable in respect of university degrees, as such, are as follows:—

In the case of a secondary teacher, no bonus is payable for a pass degree, but a bonus of £43 is payable for an honours degree.

In the case of a vocational teacher a bonus of £40 is payable in respect of:—

(1) A pass degree of a recognised university together with at least three years' approved experience in a commercial or industrial occupation;

or

(2) A B.Sc. (general), with distinction, of the National University of Ireland

or

(3) A first class honours primary degree

or

(4) The degree of M.A., or M.Comm., or M.Economic Science, or M.Sc., or Ph.D.

A rent allowance, varying from £10 to £40 according to the area in which the school is situated, is payable to married primary or secondary teachers. Rent allowance is not payable to vocational teachers.
