Vol. 130 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the rural electrification scheme will be extended to the Ballyhooly, Killavullen and Mitchelstown areas.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Ballyhooly, Killavullen and Mitchelstown rural areas have been considered on a number of occasions but have not so far been successful in being selected for development. The board have also informed me that there has been improvement in the economic position of Ballyhooly and Killavullen and that these two areas should have a better prospect of being selected for development when next considered by the board in the late autumn of this year.

The board add that the Mitchelstown area shows a poor financial return which could be improved if a higher percentage of householders would agree to accept supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the Electricity Supply Board propose to extend the rural electrification scheme to the unconnected areas in the parish of Castleisland, County Kerry.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Castleisland rural areas was considered in December, 1951, but as the financial return was found to be insufficient the area was not selected for development. The board add that the poor financial return is mainly due to the scattered nature of the premises in the area.
