Vol. 131 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Hardboard in Local Authority Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Cork City Manager has decided to use hardboard to cover the inside walls of 36 bungalows at Ballyphehane, Cork, instead of plaster; and, if so, if he will state (1) which course is the more economical, (2) if the proposed hardboard is manufactured in this country and (3) whether, in view of the fact that plasterers are now freely available, he has satisfied himself that it is advisable to sanction this change at the present time.

I understand that a decision to the effect indicated by the Deputy has been made in relation to 30 bungalows at Ballyphehane. The use of hardboard was specified in relation to one bedroom in each of 20 of these houses and the extension of its use to the entire interior would require my approval. This has not yet been officially sought. The city manager's views on the specific points raised by the Deputy appear to be (1) that there is very little difference in cost and that the use of hardboard may prove more economical; (2) that the hardboard is of Irish manufacture; and (3) that plasterers are not available to an extent that will enable due progress to be made with the work if the plastering provisions in the specification are followed.

Has the Minister made any inquiries as to the lasting qualities of hardboard as compared with plaster and the hygenic qualities of hardboard? Is he aware that there are plenty of plasterers available in Cork and Dublin?

That is a separate question.
