Vol. 134 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lime and Fertiliser Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will have the lime and fertiliser scheme amended so as to provide that it may be availed of to secure lime only or may apply to a portion of a farmer's holding only if the applicant so desires.

I regret that I am not in a position to add anything to the reply which I gave to a similar question by the Deputy on the 26th June last. I can assure the Deputy that there are many formidable difficulties in the way of implementing the suggestions he makes.

Is the Minister aware that there is quite a number of farmers who are unwilling or unable to avail of the scheme as it is because of the substantial annual charge that would be put on their farms whereas they would willingly avail of the scheme if it was confined to lime, as suggested in the question, and the benefit obtained would be of a more permanent nature?

Mr. Walsh

It would mean reviewing the whole scheme but, however, I will have that matter considered.
