Vol. 134 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dressed Beef Licences.

andMr. John Lynch asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a resident of Birkenhead who is the most extensive buyer of Kerry bullocks was obliged to appoint agents in this country on his behalf in connection with the export of dressed beef because he was not an Irish national; and that the licences issued to two of these agents have now expired; and, if so, if he will now have a licence issued to his newly-appointed agent so that he may be duly registered to export dressed beef under the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Acts.

Mr. Walsh

The reply to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part, new licences for the export of dressed beef are being granted only to persons who provide their own slaughtering premises suitable for registration under the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Acts.

Has the newly-appointed agent made a request to the Minister's Department for a licence for the export of this dressed meat?

Mr. Walsh

I do not understand the Deputy's use of the term "newly-appointed agent".

There is a newly-appointed agent for this man in Birkenhead. I gave the name to the Department.

Mr. Walsh

We do not issue licences to anybody except those who provide their own premises.

Is the Minister satisfied that this man has the necessary premises?

Mr. Walsh

No application for a licence has been turned down, provided he qualifies for a licence, that is, by having premises suitable for the purpose.

If such application is made, will the Minister have investigations made as regards the premises?

Mr. Walsh

That is a separate question. No applications have been refused.

I can give you all the information about that.

You will not be long giving information, after the North-West Dublin result.
