Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities (Works) Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to sanction proposals and provide money immediately under the Local Authorities (Works) Act so that a scheme of £1,100 for urgent drainage works may be carried out in Rhode area, County Offaly; if he has received a resolution from Offaly County Council on the matter; and if he will ensure that the work is undertaken immediately.

I am aware that on the 17th ultimo the Offaly County Council passed a resolution requesting a further grant towards the cost of carrying out drainage work in the Rhode area under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949. The maximum amount of grant for the year has already been made available, and works to absorb this grant have been approved. The council have been informed that if they wish to have approval to the proposal referred to by the Deputy they should indicate what works of a corresponding estimated cost they would drop to permit of its being undertaken.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the total cost of schemes submitted to his Department up to 29th November, 1952, or the latest date for which such figures are available under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, by (1) Laoighis County Council; (2) Offaly County Council and the total amounts allocated to date to each of the counties mentioned and, further, whether any more grants will be made available for approved schemes for the year ending 31st March, 1953.

The total cost of works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, submitted in the present financial year up to 29th November, 1952, by Laoighis and Offaly County Councils is £70,640 and £35,124 respectively; the grants allocated are £29,500 and £4,000 respectively. The grants made available are final and cannot be increased.
