Vol. 136 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Employment Exchange.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the reason for the closing of the employment exchange in Birr, County Offaly; and if he will make the necessary arrangements to have it reopened in more suitable premises without unnecessary delay.

The former manager of the branch employment office, Birr, resigned on the 31st December last and the Department was obliged to vacate the premises. As alternative premises could not be secured the work of the branch employment office was temporarily transferred to the employment exchange, Athlone. As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware, applications for the vacant post of branch manager have already been invited by advertisement in the local Press and it is expected that an appointment will be made shortly. The responsibility for the provision of suitable office accommodation will rest on the new appointee.

Is it proposed to continue to employ managers of branch employment offices on the existing basis or is it contemplated that these offices will be staffed by permanent civil servants?

I have given some considerationto that matter but so far I have not decided on any change. This is in pursuance of the old policy.

If the new appointee finds it impossible, as has been stated, to find suitable alternative premises, would the Minister mind asking for the opinion of the members of the Birr urban council on the matter?

I have said that the responsibility for the provision of suitable office accommodation will rest on the new appointee. That matter will be taken into consideration in the making of the appointment.
