Vol. 138 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Westmeath Migrants.

asked the Minister forLands whether he is aware that a number of migrants from Connemara who have recently been transferred to holdings in Ballinlough, Delvin, County Westmeath, have not yet been supplied with horses and are seriously hampered in their work by lack of them; and, if so, if he will take steps to have these migrants supplied with horses at the earliest possible moment.

It was a condition of the migration of the persons in question that they would not be supplied with horses. This was made clear to them before they undertook to migrate and, accordingly, horses will not be made available to them. Special assistance such as stock, implements, etc., is not supplied on a uniform scale but depends on the requirements and means of the individual migrants.

Can you give them a tractor or Tulyar?

Was it not the practice for a number of years until this spring at least, where group migration was put into operation by the Land Commission, that the migrants were supplied, amongst other things, with horses?

Would the Minister not consider this a suitable time to carry out an experiment by giving machinery, tractors and so forth, on a co-operative basis to groups of farmers who are migrated from the West of Ireland in this manner?

That can be considered.

Were horses not usually supplied in these cases to migrants?
