Vol. 139 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Ross Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state if he is aware of the grave hardship caused to the residents of New Ross, County Wexford, due to the inadequate water supply and further if the proposals for the new scheme have been sanctioned by his Department; and, if so, when this scheme will be commenced.

I am aware that the water supply in New Ross has been inadequate for some time past. The documents in connection with the improvement scheme have been approvedand the sanitary authority is in a position to invite tenders for the carrying out of the work.

Is the Minister aware that the water supply in New Ross is so serious that in the fever hospital no water came into the tank from Thursday night until Monday night, so much so that they had absolutely no water in the hospital? I am not a member of the local body concerned, but would the Minister make representations to them to commence this scheme as soon as possible?

We appreciate that fact so clearly that in March last we approved of the acceptance of tenders for the supply of pipes and the other requirements necessary for the proposed scheme.

Can the Minister not indicate why the work has not commenced in that case?

Well, we have taken all the steps that are necessary and that are within our power, and I suppose that is as far as we can go.

Is it the fault of the local authority?

It is not a question of fault. I have indicated that they are free to invite tenders, and if they have not done so then the Deputy can attribute the blame whatever way he likes.
