Vol. 143 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Curing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture is he is now in a position to indicate what steps the bacon curers propose to take to improve the curing of Irish bacon so as to make available to consumers Irish bacon of a more palatable nature.

At a meeting on 29th October between my Department, the Bacon Curers' Association and the Retail Grocery, Dairy and Allied Trades' Association (R.G.D.A.T.A.), it was suggested that the R.G.D.A.T.A., whose complaints about the curing of bacon are the only ones that have been received, might furnish to my Department particulars of cases in which the bacon being supplied by curers was considered unsatisfactory. Such cases would then be investigated so that, if the complaints were substantiated, the curers concerned would carry out any improvements that might be proved necessary. No cases have so far been reported to my Department.
