Vol. 143 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities (Works) Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state why a grant cannot be allocated to the Dún Laoghaire Corporation in respect of the two schemes submitted by the corporation under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, estimated to cost £7,500; and if, in view of the number of persons registering at the Dún Laoghaire employment exchange, he will reconsider this matter so that a grant may be made.

The question of a grant to Dún Laoghaire Corporation for works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act is at present under consideration in conjunction with related matters. It is hoped to issue a decision in the near future. I may say that there are in any event a number of technical objections to the major scheme, estimated to cost £5,000.

I would, however, point out that substantial grants are being made available to the corporation for the execution of road works in the present financial year. In addition, the corporation are being advised of an extra grant of £5,000 from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote.

When will that take effect?

I think in the very near future.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give the list of drainage schemes to be carried out in South Kerry under the Local Authorities (Works) Act for the financial year ending 31st March, 1954, and the sum of money allocated for each such scheme.

The selection, including the location of works for execution under the Local Authorities (Works) Act rests with each local authority. The works proposed to be carried out by the Kerry County Council under the Act are not segregated in the submission of schemes by the council to my Department to show the schemes situated in South Kerry.

Will the Minister say whether the local authority in this particular case means the members ofthe county council or the county manager?

Is the Minister able to give the total sum of money allocated in South Kerry or in County Kerry under the Local Authorities (Works) Act?

I have not that information. It would be possible for a Deputy, by asking that question, to ascertain the information from the Kerry County Council.

Has the Minister the total figure?

I have not.
