Vol. 143 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aran Island Steamer Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that although it is stated in the recently issued C.I.E. annual report that preliminary steps were taken during the year ended 31st March last for the replacement of the S.S. Dun Aengus, an improved vessel has not yet been provided; and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that there are 2,000 inhabitants of the Aran Islands dependent on this service to and from the mainland, he will state whether he hasurged on the company the necessity for dealing with this matter expeditiously; and, further, if he can indicate when an improved service may be expected.

I have on a number of occasions conveyed to C.I.E. my desire that the S.S. Dun Aengusshould be replaced by a more suitable vessel as soon as possible. I am informed that the necessary arrangements are being pressed forward as expeditiously as possible but that it is not practicable to indicate when the new vessel can be put into operation.
