Vol. 150 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission House Letting.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the cost of the repairs carried out to the house on the McLaren estate, Julianstown, which was built several years ago by the Land Commission but was only recently leased to a tenant, and the reason for the delay in allocating this house and farm.

Recent works on the buildings situated on this holding consisted of repainting the external woodwork and erecting some additional fittings in the cowbyre. The estimated cost of the painting is £12 and of the fittings £32.

The Land Commission experienced some delays and disappointments in their efforts to find a suitable migrant for the holding from a congested area.

Arising out of that reply, does the Minister tell us that the Land Commission found it impossible to take over that house over a period of almost four years?

I did not say it was impossible, but that we found difficulty in getting a migrant to take over that house. It was not over a period of four years as the Deputy mentioned; the house has been vacant for only two years. The holding was ready in 1953 and some migrants refused it.

Could the Minister say to how many migrants the holding was offered?

I am sorry. I am not in a position to answer that.
