Vol. 154 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicles, Parts, Oil and Petrol—Value of Imports.

andJ. Lynch asked the Taoiseach if he will state, in respect of the calendar year 1955, (i) the value of imports of motor-cars and parts, including tyres, motor lorries and parts, and any other variety of vehicles propelled by oil or petrol, and (ii) the quantity and value of petrol and oil imported for use by such vehicles.

Imports are brought to account only according to descriptions specified in the Official Import List. This list does not in all cases distinguish mechanically propelled vehicles according to the fuel they use nor does it distinguish all grades of oil and petrol for use in vehicles from those for other purposes. It is not therefore possible to provide the exact particulars required.

The aggregate values in 1955 of all relevant import descriptions (including those which relate only partly to the particulars required) were as follows: (i) £16,500,000 and (ii) £15,500,000. If re-exports are deducted the aggregates were: (i) £16,500,000 and (ii) £13,000,000. These totals include all imports of such categories as "Fuel oils— gas oil and distillate fuel oil (including diesel)", part of which only is appropriate to the particulars required.
