Vol. 158 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of Houses.

andBriscoe asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the location of the scheme of 103 houses, which he referred to in his reply to the debate on the Estimate for his Department, in which he stated that houses had been allocated to a teacher, a bank cashier, an accountant, a civil servant, a doctor, a hotelier and a senior official of a local authority, and what action he has taken regarding the matter.

The scheme was provided by Enniscorthy Urban District Council. The housing authority certified that the allocation of the houses was made with due regard to the provisions of the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations, 1950-53. The action taken by the Minister was to reject the claim for subsidy at the higher rate made by the local authority in respect of such lettings and to urge, both at a deputation received by him and through officers of the Department who visited the area, that the urban district council should make a detailed investigation of the housing needs of the urban district. A local authority official included in those rehoused as stated by the Minister (Volume 157, No. 10, column 1448) was misreported in the newspapers as having been an officer of the Department of Local Government.

What column did the Parliamentary Secretary quote from?

Column 1448.

Am I to understand from the Parliamentary Secretary, therefore, that there was no question of allotting these houses to a teacher, bank cashier, accountant, civil servant, doctor and hotelier? Is that the extent of the misrepresentation?

All those people, with the exception of the local government official, have been occupying those houses.
