asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce, whether he is aware that an important copper mine was in operation in Hollyford, County Tipperary, about 70 years ago, the main seam of which was never found because of the primitive prospecting conditions then existing; and whether, with a view to developing copper and other mineral resources in the area, he will bring the matter to the notice of the Canadian and other mining experts.

I am aware that there is a copper mine at Hollyford, County Tipperary, which was worked in the past. A considerable amount of information about this mine is on record in the Office of Geological Survey and this information has already been brought to the notice of a number of persons and groups who have made inquiries about the existence of copper deposits in Ireland.
The Deputy will appreciate that the reopening of this mine is a matter for private enterprise. I will be prepared to grant any necessary facilities under the Mineral Development Act, 1940, in relation to the deposits, to an applicant who can satisfy the customary conditions as to financial and technical resources.
