Vol. 159 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E.—Dublin Passenger Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what working profit was earned by C.I.E. on the operation of Dublin City passenger services during the latest period of 12 months for which the information is available.

The information sought by the Deputy is not shown separately in the accounts of C.I.E. furnished to me in accordance with the provisions of Section 34 of the Transport Act, 1950. It would be open to the Deputy to address his inquiries direct to C.I.E.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in reassessing the financial position of C.I.E. arising out of its present difficulties, he will take steps to ensure that no further increase in fares are imposed in respect of Dublin City passenger services which are operated at a substantial profit.

I am not aware that any revision of Dublin City passenger fares is contemplated by the Board of C.I.E. at present.

The board are responsible for fixing rates and charges and I will arrange that the Deputy's representations will be brought to their attention.

Is the Minister aware that in Cork and other provincial centres bus fares are very much higher than those obtaining in Dublin, and will he therefore ask C.I.E. in any future fare adjustments to consider giving these centres a fair crack of the whip?

That is certainly a separate question.
