asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each county (a) the number of primary schools which require replacement or reconstruction, and (b) the number and locations of the schools in respect of which proposals for replacement or reconstruction have been under consideration for more than five years.
Written Answers. - Reconstruction and Replacement of Schools.
The attached statement gives in column (1) the number, per county, of existing national schools which require to be replaced by new schools and in column (2) the number, per county, of existing national schools which require to be reconstructed or enlarged.
The statement also gives in column (3) the number of cases in which grants have been sanctioned for the erection of new schools to replace defective schools included in column (1) but in which building operations have not yet been commenced, and in column (4) the number of cases in which grants have been sanctioned for the reconstruction of schools included in column (2) but in which works have not been commenced.
I regret that I am unable to give the information requested in (b) of the Deputy's question, since its compilation would involve the expenditure of a considerable amount of official time which, I am satisfied, would not be warranted.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the last three years (a) the total amount expended on the building of new primary schools and the reconstruction of old schools, and the number of schools involved; (b) the number of such schools on each of which more than £10,000 was expended, and the total expenditure involved; and (c) the number and locations of rural primary schools on each of which less than £10,000 was expended, and the total expenditure involved.
The attached statement gives, in column (2), the total amount expended on the building of new national schools and the reconstruction and improvement of existing schools in each of the last three financial years.
Column (3) shows the number of new schools completed and of schools reconstructed in each year under review; as regards schemes of reconstruction, figures are not readily available except in regard to those cases in which the grant involved was £5,000 or over.
As regards (b) of the Deputy's question, columns (4) and (5) show respectively, in respect of grants of over £10,000, the total number of new schools and reconstructed schools which have been completed in each year under review and the total amount of grants in these cases. The full amount of the grant for any new or reconstructed school was not necessarily expended in the year in which the work was completed.
I regret that I am unable to give the information requested at (c) of the Deputy's question, since the compilation would involve a considerable expenditure of official time which, I consider, would not be warranted.
