Vol. 160 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cyprus—Government Policy.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is prepared to make a statement indicating the Government's policy in regard to Cyprus, and indicating whether any action can be taken in the United Nations Organisation to ensure that the people of Cyprus will be accorded the right of national self-determination.

A request for consideration of the application to the population of Cyprus of the right of self-determination appears on the provisional agenda of the forthcoming session of the United Nations Assembly. While it is not my intention to indicate in advance of the session the specific policy to be adopted by the Government on the various matters likely to come before the Assembly, I can assure the Deputy that the Government will approach the question of Cyprus in the light of the strong attachment of the Irish people to the principle of national self-determination.

I hope the Government is worrying about Archbishop Makarios.

Would the Minister say whether Ireland will vote for the inclusion of the Cyprus issue on the Agenda of the United Nations?

I cannot say in what form it will appear but if it appears in that form the answer is "Yes".
