Vol. 164 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish Shipping Companies Freight Earnings.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the estimated gross freight earnings (a) from all sources, and (b) from cross-Channel shipping, of Irish shipping companies, less payments outside the State, in respect of the years 1953 to 1956 inclusive.

The estimated gross freight earnings of Irish shipping companies from all activities except coastal transport, less payments made outside the State (for equipment, charter hire, repairs, bunkers, stores, harbour dues, etc.) amounted to £1.0 million in 1953, to £1.0 million in 1954, to £1.5 million in 1955 and to £2.1 million in 1956.

Separate figures relating to cross-Channel traffic only are not separately distinguished and particulars of earnings from coastal traffic are not available.
