Vol. 164 No. 7

Written Answers. - Shipping Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number and net tonnage of vessels, including their repeated voyages, that arrived at and departed from ports in the State from and to ports in the Six Counties during the years 1954 to 1956, inclusive, distinguishing between ships with cargoes and in ballast, and the number and net tonnage of such vessels classified by nationality.

The following table shows the particulars required in respect of 1956. As the shipping statistics are not normally compiled in this detail the preparation of similar statements for 1954 and 1955 will take some time and arrangements have been made for them to be sent direct to the Deputy by the Central Statistics Office as soon as possible.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number and net tonnage of tankers, including their repeated voyages, that entered and cleared from ports in the State from and to Great Britain during the years 1954 to 1956, inclusive, distinguishing between ships with cargoes and in ballast, and the number and net tonnage of such vessels classified by nationality.

The particulars sought by the Deputy are not readily available since the customs documents from which the shipping statistics are compiled do not show explicitly whether or not each vessel returned is a tanker. In the circumstances, perhaps the Deputy would be good enough to repeat the question in a month's time. In the meantime the Central Statistics Office will see how far the information required can be extracted from the data available.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the years 1954 to 1956, inclusive, (a) the c.i.f. value of imports consigned from Britain, (b) the f.o.b. value of exports consigned to Britain, (c) the estimated freight content of (a), and (d) the estimated amount of freight paid on (b).

The trade statistics for 1954-56 were not compiled by reference to country of consignment and it is not therefore possible to state the exact particulars required in parts (a) and (b) of the question. The trade statistics show imports by country of origin and exports by country of final destination and the following table, showing trade with Britain in 1954-56, is compiled from this source:—

VALUE of trade with Great Britain, 1954-56

Year

C.i.f. value of imports which originated in Great Britain

F.o.b. value of exports consigned to Great Britain as final country of destination

Owing to the absence of data, no reliable estimates can be made for parts (c) and (d) of the question. Since in the Trade Statistics imports are valued on a c.i.f. basis and exports on an f.o.b. basis it is not necessary for Balance of Payments purposes to obtain explicitly figures for freight (except for the net freight earnings of Irish shipping companies), and particulars of the freight charges in respect of traffic with Britain are not therefore available.
