Vol. 166 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bogus Telephone Calls.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a large number of taxi-drivers are in danger of losing their employment because of a bogus telephone call campaign; and what action the Gárda Síochána are taking against the offenders.

I have had representations about this from the employees themselves some of whom came on a deputation to see me about a week ago. Since then, there have been two successful prosecutions which should have a deterrent effect as both of those convicted were the holders of driving licences for public service vehicles which were suspended as a result of their conviction. Special measures are now being taken in conjunction with the Post Office authorities and the Deputy may take it that the Garda Síochána will spare no effort to put an end to the threat to the livelihood of the men concerned.

Might I ask the Minister if he is aware that in the six weeks ending 11th February, 1958, the number of bogus telephone calls received was 2,886 and that in one day, Saturday, 1st February, there were 162 bogus calls? Further I would ask him if he is aware of the seriousness of the position and that as a result of these calls there has been a mileage of 20,375 completed at a loss of £127 6s. 8d. in one week? In view of the seriousness of the matter, will the Minister ask the Garda Síochána to take a special interest in this matter?

I am quite satisfied to leave the matter in the hands of the Garda Síochána. I am satisfied they are quite competent to deal with it.
