Vol. 167 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Charges: Cost-of-Living Increase.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the estimated increase in the cost-of-living figure which will follow the new increased bus and train charges.

It is estimated that the consumer price index number (to base mid-August 1947=100) will be increased by 0.17 points consequent on the increase in rail and bus fares.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the increase which will follow these charges will impose considerable hardship on the people? Will he take any steps to see that private employers will not take this as a headline and seek to compensate themselves for the increase of 10/- awarded under the national agreement?

I do not see what can be done in the matter.

How does the Deputy think that increased wages can be paid?

There is a device known as subsidy which can be spread equally over the whole country.

What tax will the Deputy vote for?

I will vote for any tax spread equally over all the people but not for a tax on the people who are trying to send their children to school.
