Vol. 171 No. 13

Death of Apostolic Nuncio: Expression of Sympathy.

A Cheann Comhairle, since the Dáil last meet, we have had to mourn the death of the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, The Most Reverned Dr. Alberto Levame.

It would, I know, be in accord with the wish of every member that the Dáil should, through you, Sir, officially convey to The Holy Father an expression of our profound regret.

The late Dr. Levame had a most varied and successful career as a diplomatic representative of the Holy See. He severed in several European capitals and, later, as Nuncio to states in Latin America. Prior to his appointment here, he held the delicate post of Internuncio at Cairo.

On his coming amongst us, some four years ago, he made it known that he regarded his appointment to Ireland as the fulfiment of his dearest wish and the climax of his career. His final desire was that his body should rest here, and remain with us. Dr. Levame travelled estensively throughout our country, attended many ecclesiastical and civil functions, and everywhere endeared himself to our people by his genial and warm-hearted personality.

He was made an Honorary Freeman of a number of our cities and, only a few days ago, had conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate of the national university.

In conveying to The Holy Father an expression of our regret, we would wish, a Cheann Comhairle, that you would tender also our deepest sympathy with His Holiness on the loss of so distinguished and lovable a representative.

I bhFlaitheas Dé go raibh a anam.

Members rose in their places.
