Vol. 174 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in Mayo Townland.

24.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission are aware of the congestion in the townland of Meeltrane, County Mayo; and if they propose to take steps to remedy it.

All holdings in the townland of Meeltran were revested in the tenants upwards of 40 years ago. Recently, the Land Commission considered the possibility of acquiring a 24 acre holding in the townland but proceedings did not materialise. There are no current proceedings for the acquisition of lands in Meeltran but if any suitable lands become available the Land Commission will make every effort to meet the needs of deserving congests.

Would the Minister bring to the notice of the Land Commission that, even though these holdings were vested 40 years ago, there are 21 holdings in this townland, the highest of which has a valuation of £3 10s. and would the Minister ask the Land Commission to undertake relief of congestion there? The fact that they are vested does not mean that they are economic.

As the Deputy knows, we do deal with congestion among vested tenants where it is possible. We shall consider doing something in the area if land can be acquired.
