Vol. 175 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jury Services.

6.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that under existing legislation persons who are qualified to act as jurors for as long as 14 or 15 years are not called upon to act as such, whereas persons whose names are already upon jury books are frequently called to give service as jurors; and if it is intended to remedy this situation in the forthcoming Jurors Bill by permitting the addition each year to jury books of the names of persons who have qualified as jurors during that year.

The proposed legislation will provide for the enlargement of any jury district where under existing law jurors are liable to be selected more frequently than is considered fair and reasonable. Such enlargement will mean an increase in the number of jurors liable to be called from the particular district and will extend the life of the jurors book for that district. This solution will relieve the hardship referred to by the Deputy Moreover, it is preferable to the one suggested in the Question. To allow a jurors' book to be amended by the addition of newly-qualified persons would involve serious practical difficulties.
