Vol. 185 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boyne Mussel Industry: Effect of Harbour Deepening.

36.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the deepening of Drogheda Harbour at the Boyne estuary, which will soon commence, will have a detrimental effect on the mussel industry carried on in that area; and, if so, if it is his intention to ensure that Drogheda Harbour Board authorities pay adequate compensation to the people affected.

I am not aware of the extent to which the dredging of the Boyne Estuary, which the Drogheda Harbour Commissioners propose to undertake, may have a detrimental effect on the local mussel industry. It is a condition of the State Grant towards the cost of the works that whatever measures may be stipulated by the Minister for Lands for the protection of the fisheries will be complied with in the execution of the scheme.

I have no function in regard to the payment of compensation to any persons who might be affected as a result of the dredging which the Drogheda Harbour Commissioners propose to undertake.
