Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of American Airlines Branch at Shannon.

96.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what steps he took to try to prevent the closing of the branch of Seaboard and Western Airlines at Shannon; and whether he had any consultations with this Company prior to their closing.

The closing of the Seaboard World Airlines station at Shannon Airport was a result of a commercial decision taken by the head office of the company. The decision was based on financial and organisational considerations of a fundamental nature which could not have been affected by any steps taken by me or by my Department.

There were frequent consultations between officials of my Department and of the company at all stages prior to the company's final decision. I am glad to say that the company will continue to operate both scheduled and non-scheduled flights through the Airport in 1962.
