Vol. 193 No. 4

State Lands (Workhouse) Bill, 1961— Committee Stage.

Section 1 agreed to.
SECTION 2.

I move amendment No. 1.

In page 2, line 27, after "Ireland" to insert "or by the Commissioners administering the laws for the relief of the poor in Ireland or their predecessors in title".

The purpose of this amendment is to provide that the benefits of any leases of these lands granted prior to the establishment of the Local Government Board for Ireland will pass to the appropriate health authority in addition to the benefits of the leases made after the establishment of that board which is already provided for in the section. Certain leases were made prior to 1872 when the Irish Local Government Board was established in relation to the foundling hospital estate.

I think the necessity for the amendment demonstrates the advisability of not rushing these Bills through.

I think we could have usefully employed the Seanad on that job. However, I concede credit to the Deputy for that.
