Vol. 196 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Maternity Beds.

8.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health the number of beds for maternity cases available in Dublin in (a) public hospitals and (b) voluntary hospitals, and the annual number of births.

The number of beds available for the treatment of maternity cases in the area served by the Dublin Health Authority, that is, Dublin city and county is 131 in health authority hospitals and 361 in voluntary hospitals. The number of live births registered in this area in 1961 was 20,312.

The Deputy will appreciate that, while the foregoing answers the question fully, erroneous deductions could be drawn from the figures if accounts were not taken of maternity beds, numbering 239 on 31st March, 1961, in private hospitals and maternity homes.
