Vol. 196 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arterial Drainage in Galway and Roscommon.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of (a) County Galway and (b) County Roscommon the total expenditure to date on arterial drainage works; and what further allocations have been sanctioned.

Arterial drainage schemes are dealt with on a catchment area basis and no record is kept of the expenditure in each county.

Is it not a fact that over £2,000,000 has been expended on the Corrib and that within the past fortnight, the Parliamentary Secretary was gracious enough to attend in Ballinasloe the opening ceremony of another catchment area, the drainage of which will cost £800,000? That is a total of almost £3,000,000 for County Galway. Is it not a fact that not a single penny has been sanctioned or allocated for County Roscommon?

That is not correct. I should like to remind the Deputy that the Moy scheme is costing £3¼ million and that the counties benefiting are Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. In the Corrib-Clare scheme which is costing £3,000,000, the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon benefit.

May I point out that the area of Roscommon that is benefiting from the drainage of the Corrib and the Moy would fit into this Chamber?

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of money spent on the Mayo coast for the provision of landing facilities for fishermen in each year from the 1st April, 1954 to the 31st March, 1957; and if he will indicate the positions on which the money was spent.

The information is in the form of a tabular statement, which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:
