Vol. 197 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Jumping Team: Subsistence Allowance.

46.

asked the Minister for Defence the amount of the subsistence allowance paid to each member of the Army Jumping Team per day during the periods when the team is competing in jumping events outside this country.

The allowances payable to members of the Army Jumping Team during the periods when the team is competing in jumping events outside this country vary from venue to venue and are subject to revision from time to time. I trust that it will suffice for the Deputy's purpose if I give details of these allowances in respect of the venues at which the team has competed this year. As the information is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated in the Official Report.

Following is the statement :—

Notes:

(1) When the Army Jumping team competes at a horse show outside this country the show authorities concerned provide board and accommodation free of charge for the members of the team during the period of the show and in some cases for a day or two before and after that period.

(2) In respect of any period of their stay before or after the show during which the show authorities do not provide free board and accommodation subsistence allowance at the rates indicated in Column (2) above is payable to each member of the team.

(3) The special allowance indicated in Column (3) which is intended to cover such incidental matters as reciprocal hospitality, tips, valeting, odd meals, etc., and which is additional to free board and accommodation or subsistence allowance as the case may be, is paid to each member of team

( a) At the full rate for each day of the actual period of the show.

(b) At half the full rate for each day during which the members of the team are at the show venue before the show and for not more than one day after the show.

Is the Minister aware that members of the team find it extremely difficult to repay hospitality on the subsistence allowance they are getting?

I am not so aware but I shall have the matter examined.

Will the Minister give us two or three examples of the subsistence allowance now?

That will be circulated, but since the Deputy has asked the question, let me give one example in regard to Lucerne. There was a daily allowance of £3 18s. 6d., and a special allowance of £3 8s. 0d.

Is that £3 8s. per day of £3 8s. while they were in Lucerne?

Per day. There are other perquisites.
