Vol. 199 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Signing for Unemployment Assistance.

37.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he can take any steps to alter the time-wasting procedure requiring unemployment assistance recipients in rural areas to sign evidence of unemployment on six days per week.

In answer to previous questions put down by the Deputy on this subject, on 16th May, 17th July and 31st October of last year, I have already informed him that I am satisfied that the arrangements for furnishing evidence of unemployment by recipients of unemployment assistance in rural areas are reasonable, and that they represent the minimum safeguard necessary for the prevention of abuse.

I must stress the fact that it is only those unemployed persons who are resident within two miles of a local office of my Department who are required to attend there daily. I am not prepared to relax the requirements in respect of such persons.
